A Typical Day
We arrive at the club about
half an hour before the start of flying. There is lots of work to
do, open the hanger, get the aircraft out, daily inspections, locate
the winches to the correct position, check and repair the cables,
get all the necessary vehicles out and in position, and finally get
the gliders to the launch area.
Names are quickly added to the
flying list, kettles are boiled for a cuppa, the duty instructor and
duty pilot get people organised for the first flight of the day. We
then settle into the days routine flying programme. One of the
members runs a log book containing information of each individual
flight.
It can get hot at Kingsfield
so we erect a sun shade against the bus, which is our operation
centre for the day. Some of the family members, mum and the kids go
down to the beach at Dhekelia for an hour or two,
other mums are flying (and the kids who are old enough),
We continue flying
for the rest of the day until the light fails. One lady has gone
solo for the first time (she buys beer all round) so we have something
to celebrate in the evening in our club house when we finish flying.
At the end of flying
the aircraft are flown to be landed back nearer the hanger, where
they are stored for the night, winches and vehicles are parked and
all are locked up.
Once the bar in the
club house is open we pay our flying fees, then we all have a glass
or two and maybe a barbeque outside in the evening. We have worked
hard all day in the Cyprus sunshine and we know how to play hard
after a days flying.
On Saturday nights
the people who have travelled from Akrotiri may stay with the friends
they have made at the club or they may stay in accommodation at Dhekelia
garrison when available.
